What the survey covers

The corridor: vegetation encroaching on the loading gauge and lineside trees that could reach the track; drainage, ditches, culvert inlets and evidence of standing water; embankment and cutting condition including slips, erosion and slumping; fencing and boundary integrity; and encroachment, fly-tipping and unauthorised access, which on urban sections is a constant. Structures: bridges and their abutments and soffits, culverts, retaining walls, tunnel portals, and lineside buildings. Assets: signals and their sighting, gantries and masts, overhead line equipment where present, level crossings and their surfaces and sightlines. Plus construction and renewals documentation, which is a large part of what actually gets commissioned — progress on a worksite where nobody can walk in freely.

The constraints are line of sight and access, not the flying

A rail corridor is the same geometry problem as a pipeline: long, thin, and subject to a visual line of sight rule that forces the pilot to reposition every mile or so. That sets the cost per mile, and beyond-visual-line-of-sight approval changes the arithmetic substantially — worth asking about directly if the route is long. The second constraint is that repositioning along a railway means repeatedly getting to the lineside, which is largely private land requiring landowner permission, and sometimes requiring the operator's own permission to be anywhere near the boundary. Flying over an operational railway carries its own considerations: an aircraft coming down on the track is a serious event, so expect operators to require specific risk assessment, and expect the survey to be planned to fly alongside rather than over wherever that is possible.

What it cannot do

It does not inspect track geometry, rail head condition, welds, fastenings or ballast condition in any meaningful way — those are measured by track recording vehicles and by walked inspection, and no aerial image substitutes for either. It does not assess structures beyond visible condition. It is not a signalling inspection. The honest scope is the corridor, the visible condition of structures and lineside assets, encroachment and vegetation, and documentation of works. That is a substantial and useful scope, and it is the part that currently costs possessions to gather. Being clear about the boundary is what stops an aerial survey being oversold into a role it will fail in.

Specifying it

Give the route mileage and whether the line is operational. Say what you need: corridor and vegetation, structures, encroachment, or works progress — they imply different flying and different resolution. Say whether you need imagery, an orthomosaic of the corridor, or a surface model, because a survey feeding a design is a different product from one feeding a maintenance list. Name the coordinate system and, if the operator uses one, the linear referencing so findings come back at a mileage the maintenance team recognises. Flag lineside access and whose permission is required. And say whether the operator requires specific approval for flight near the boundary, because on most networks they do and that lead time is the schedule.

Common questions

Do we need a possession?

For the aerial survey itself, generally no — that is the main reason to do it this way. You may still need the operator's approval to fly near or over the corridor, and you will need lineside access to reposition.

Can it inspect the track itself?

Not meaningfully. Track geometry, rail head condition, welds and fastenings are measured by recording vehicles and walked inspection. The aerial scope is the corridor, structures, encroachment and drainage.

How much does it cost?

Driven by route mileage and by whether the operation is within visual line of sight or BVLOS. Inspection quotes on SkyLog have ranged $100 to about $1,550 with a $300 median across 13 quotes of every type, which is not a per-mile guide — post the mileage and scope for real numbers.

Can a drone fly over an operational railway?

It depends on the operator's rules more than on aviation ones. Expect a specific risk assessment and often a requirement to fly alongside rather than over. Raise it at quote stage.

Can it map vegetation encroachment properly?

For a visual assessment, yes. For measured clearance against a loading gauge you want LiDAR, since photogrammetry struggles under and within canopy. Say which you need.

Can it document a worksite for progress?

Yes, and it is one of the most common commissions — a renewals or construction site where nobody can walk in freely, captured the same way each visit.
