Drone Construction Site Survey
A drone can capture a site to a few centimetres. Whether that capture is a survey, in the sense your design team or your jurisdiction means it, depends on ground control and on who signs it — and those are two separate questions worth asking separately.

The whole site, measurable
An orthomosaic and a surface model cover every square metre rather than the points someone had time to walk. For anything with awkward terrain, live plant or restricted access, that coverage is the point.
Accuracy is a specification
Two to three centimetres with RTK or PPK and ground control; five or so with control alone; visual only without it. It is a decision to make before the flight, because it changes the day's work rather than the processing.
Know when you need a stamp
In most US states a deliverable presented as a survey of record must be signed by a licensed surveyor. A pilot can capture the data; only a licensee can certify it. Say which you need when you post.

What this settles
- An orthomosaic and dense point cloud, and from them a terrain model, a surface model, contours, cross-sections and earthwork volumes.
- Export in the format whoever opens the file actually needs — CAD, LandXML, GeoTIFF, LAS or LAZ, or GIS layers.
- An error statement, when checkpoints are shot and residuals reported.
- A baseline that later surveys can be differenced against, if it is tied to permanent control from the outset.
What it does not
- See the ground under vegetation. Photogrammetry maps the canopy, and no processing recovers what the camera never saw — that is a LiDAR job.
- Reconstruct water, or very uniform surfaces like fresh snow, wet tarmac or plain sand.
- Fully capture steep faces and undercuts from above.
- Mean anything without ground control. An aircraft's onboard positioning gives a model that is internally consistent but may be shifted and tilted.
Ask how many control points will be placed, how they will be surveyed, and what residuals will be reported. A survey without checkpoints has no error statement, and a number with no error statement is not a survey result.

What the survey actually produces
The base capture is a set of overlapping nadir images, usually with obliques added, processed into an orthomosaic and a dense point cloud. From those come the deliverables people actually design from: a digital terrain model with the vegetation and structures stripped, a digital surface model with them left in, contours at the interval your team works to, cross-sections and profiles along alignments you specify, and volumes where earthworks are involved. Those export as CAD, as LandXML, as GeoTIFF, as LAS or LAZ, or as GIS layers. Which of these you need is a question for whoever will open the file — a civils team wanting a surface in their design software and a project manager wanting a measurable site image are asking for different things from the same flight.
Ground control is what separates a picture from a survey
An aircraft's onboard positioning alone gives you a model that is internally consistent but may be shifted, and sometimes tilted, relative to the real world. Ground control fixes it: targets placed across the site and surveyed with a rover, so the model is tied to your coordinate system and the fit can be checked. An RTK or PPK aircraft narrows the gap considerably and reduces how many targets are needed, but it does not remove the value of independent checkpoints — those are what let anyone verify the result rather than take it on trust. Ask any pilot how many control points they will place, how they will be surveyed, and what residuals they will report. A survey without checkpoints has no error statement, and a number with no error statement is not a survey result.
Where drone survey struggles
Vegetation is the main one: photogrammetry sees the canopy, not the ground beneath it, and no amount of processing recovers what the camera never saw. On a heavily vegetated site the honest answer is LiDAR, which penetrates gaps in the canopy, or conventional ground survey for the covered areas. Water is another — surfaces with no texture and constant movement do not reconstruct. Very uniform surfaces such as fresh snow, wet tarmac or plain sand give photogrammetry little to match. Steep faces and undercuts need obliques and sometimes cannot be fully captured from above at all. A pilot who raises these before quoting is describing your site accurately; one who does not may be about to discover them on the day.
Specifying it so quotes are comparable
State the site area and the coordinate system, including the vertical datum — a survey delivered in the wrong datum is a survey delivered twice. State the accuracy tier you need and what it feeds: a planning application, an earthworks design, a stock figure and a marketing image are four different tolerances. Say whether the deliverable needs to be certified. Name the file formats and the software they are opening in. Flag site conditions — live plant, traffic, vegetation, restricted airspace, security — because those change mobilisation more than the flying does. And if this is the first of a series, say so: a baseline survey that later surveys will be differenced against should be tied to permanent control from the outset.
Common questions
How accurate is a drone site survey?
With RTK or PPK plus ground control, around two to three centimetres is routine. With ground control alone, nearer five. With neither, the model is internally consistent but its absolute position is not guaranteed. The accuracy you get is the accuracy you specified and paid for, so specify it.
Does it replace a licensed surveyor?
Not where a licence is required. In most US states a deliverable presented as a survey of record must be signed and sealed by a licensed surveyor. Plenty of drone survey work is not of that kind — earthworks volumes, progress surfaces, design context — but if you need a stamp, say so, because it determines who can take the job.
How much does a drone site survey cost?
It scales with site area, the accuracy tier and the deliverables. Mapping and survey quotes on SkyLog are too few so far to publish an honest range, so we would rather point you at real quotes than at an invented average. Posting the site is free.
How long does it take?
Flying a modest site is a morning, including placing control. Processing and drafting take longer than the flight, so ask about turnaround separately — a few days is typical, and same-week is normal for standard deliverables.
Will it work on a wooded site?
Partly. Photogrammetry maps the canopy, not the ground under it. For a wooded site you want LiDAR, or ground survey for the covered areas, or an honest acknowledgement that the terrain model under the trees is interpolated.
Can we get volumes from the same flight?
Yes — the same surface model supports cut and fill against a design or a prior survey. Supply the design surface in a format the pilot can use and ask for the comparison as a deliverable.
