Thermal finds it before it trips

Loose or corroded connections, failing splices and unbalanced phases run hot under load. A thermal pass on an energised line turns a scheduled inspection into a prioritised work list rather than a set of observations.

Thermal only works under load

This is the single most common way a line inspection is wasted. A thermal camera detects a hot spot because current is flowing through a defective connection and heating it; on a lightly loaded or de-energised circuit, the defect is at ambient temperature and invisible. Inspect during meaningful load, ideally near peak, and record the load at the time of capture — because the same anomaly means different things at 20% and 90% of rating, and any severity classification that does not state load is not a classification. Ask for radiometric files rather than thermal pictures, so an analyst can measure the rise over ambient and over a reference phase instead of judging by colour.

What a corridor survey covers

Structure by structure: poles or towers and their condition, crossarms, insulators and their contamination or damage, conductor and splice condition, dampers, hardware, guys and anchors, grounding, and any pole-mounted plant such as transformers, reclosers and switches. Then the corridor itself: vegetation encroachment with clearances, danger trees outside the corridor that could reach the conductor, encroaching structures and activity, access route condition, and erosion or washout at structure bases. Inspection is normally scoped by circuit length rather than by structure count, so give the mileage when you post — that is the number a pilot prices from.

Line of sight is the practical constraint

A corridor is long and thin, and standard rules require the pilot to keep the aircraft within visual line of sight. In practice that means repositioning along the line every mile or so, which is why a long circuit is a day of driving and short flights rather than one continuous mission. Flying beyond visual line of sight compresses that dramatically, and it requires an FAA waiver or an approved authorisation — genuinely obtainable, and increasingly common in utility work, but not something to assume a pilot holds. If the circuit is long enough for it to matter, ask directly whether they operate BVLOS and under what approval, because it changes both the schedule and the price.

Safety and access on an energised network

The aviation rules are the easy half. The rest is your own: energised equipment, minimum approach distances, switching and clearance procedures, escort requirements, and landowner access along the right of way. Substations add security and often a formal approval process. A pilot who has worked for a utility will expect all of this and will ask about it at quote stage; one who has not may not realise that the paperwork, not the flying, sets the schedule. Ask for evidence of liability cover at the level your standards require, and be explicit in the post about what site rules apply.

Common questions

Does the line need to be energised?

For thermal, yes, and ideally under meaningful load — a defect that is not carrying current is not hot. For visual and structural inspection, it makes no difference to the imagery, though it very much affects the site rules that apply.

How much does it cost?

Line work is quoted by circuit mileage and structure count rather than as a flat rate, so give both when you post. Inspection quotes on SkyLog have ranged $100 to about $1,550 with a $300 median from 13 quotes spanning all inspection types — a corridor survey is priced quite differently from a single asset, so treat that as background rather than a guide.

Can one flight cover a whole circuit?

Only under a BVLOS approval. Within standard visual line of sight rules the pilot repositions along the corridor, so a long circuit is a series of short flights across a day. Ask whether the pilot holds a BVLOS waiver if the mileage is significant.

Can it inspect substations too?

Yes, and thermal is particularly productive there — connections, bushings and transformer cooling all show usefully. Substations carry their own security and approval requirements, so flag them separately when you post.

What about vegetation management?

The same capture supports encroachment assessment, and for a proper clearance measurement rather than a visual judgement you want LiDAR. Say which you need: they are different sensors and different prices.

What should the deliverable be?

A structure-indexed record with findings classified by severity, radiometric thermal files where thermal was flown, the load at the time of capture, and locations precise enough to send a crew to. A folder of images without structure identifiers cannot become a work order.
